Today, the Chengdu Overwatch League team officially announced its branding as the Chengdu Hunters. The team colors feature a dandelion yellow with brown and gold off-tones, signaling an homage to the operating esports organization, Royal Never Give Up. As one of the new Chinese teams in the Overwatch League, the Hunters have opted for an upset-looking, predatory panda for its team mascot.

Some people have questioned the validity of a Giant Panda mascot given the team’s predatory name, butWu Zefeng, General Manager of Game Broadcasting Business, HUYA Inc. clarified the Chengdu Hunters decision. It isn’t all about the Panda being mean or snarly, but about symbolizing China overall.
“We chose the giant panda as the team’s logo because it is the national treasure of China, the symbol of Chengdu, and a symbol of peace and good luck,” she said. “At the same time, the panda also boasts powerful fighting strength and represents the Chinese spirit of perseverance, and collectively with the team’s name, represents the team’s determination to achieve victory.”
Chengdu will also be joining forces with Royal Never Give Up, a highly prominent esports organization in League of Legends, to grow the team. RNG made it to top 8 at the League of Legends World Championship and won the Mid-Season Invitational earlier this year. The organization has also notoriously shown off a Panda mascot at numerous events, both domestically and abroad.
