Overwatch – Achievement Unlocked

Overwatch, Blizzard’s most recent IP, has taken the world by storm and in its rather short life-span has already reached a huge goal with the game’s 2nd anniversary coming up.

There have been a lot of negative things said about Overwatch – many linked with the way in which the year-round Overwatch League is run, some linked to the actual community. But ultimately the game has been a gigantic success, from its comics and Blizzard’s fantastic work on video and cutscene sequences down to the constant events in-game, people have flocked to the multiplayer first-person shooter. 2 years ago when the game was released, they had over 10 million players join and now, almost exactly 2 years later, the game has over 40 million players across multiple platforms from around the world. In a Developer Update released just a few hours ago Jeff Kaplan, lead designer of the Overwatch team, confirmed that the 40 million mark had been reached – alongside a plethora of new aspects coming to the game in a week’s time.

Recently Overwatch also teamed up with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, releasing a skin for Mercy where all proceeds collected from the purchase of the Pink Mercy skin would go directly to the foundation to aid in the decimation of breast cancer.

With the Overwatch League starting on its final stage this coming week, this is a great time for Blizzard to announce new aspects coming to the game for this event. After their brilliant 10-0 run through the previous stage, all eyes will be on Boston Uprising to see if they can make another brilliant showing – and maybe this time not lose in the finals to New York Excelsior (although, as an NYXL fan, I’d prefer to not see this happen). And who knows, maybe Shanghai Dragons will break their 0-30 loss streak too.

All in all, we’re extremely excited for what is to come for Overwatch and with Blizzcon looming on the horizon, we’re sure more amazing things are on the way. GGWP to Blizzard and Overwatch on 40 million players.
