Quinn on scrim replay exploit: "There were rumors that some teams knew about it earlier than others"

Gaimin Gladiators midlaner Quinn "Quinn" Callahan commented on the exploit in Dota 2 that allowed anyone to see Immortal Draft matches and scrims of professional teams. He wondered how long the website had been working and if professional players were aware. This was revealed on the All Chat podcast and posted on Reddit by Capitalist.

There was a backdoor in Dota 2 client. Aui_2000 messaged me, and he said, "Do you know about this thing?" And he sent me in, and it was a site that had all the games and scrims on it. Every team, every player, all scrims and pubs were public. This was found out a couple of days ago. Valve was told, and then it was fixed the same day. But there's a question: how long was this out for? How long did people know? Have they been using it since the thing came out? Because there were rumors that some teams knew about it earlier than others. So who knew? How long did they know?

The exploit was fixed on May 1. The first open links to the website called gabenshole.com in Russian media started to appear a few days before that. It's unclear how long the resource has been working, but it was most likely created after the patch that closed reviews to high-rank pubs.

According to the hacker's own message, he discovered the loophole after the update. He called himself an amateur and criticized the decision to hide high-MMR games from the public.

Hi, Gabe Newell. It wasn't that hard to find your hole. Next time you make a stupid decision like closing professional players' stats, at least try to fix the obvious vulnerabilities, so that even an amateur like me wouldn't exploit them.

P.S. Thanks for Dota 2. It became more than just a game for many of us. With love, Fabio Longo.

On March 19, Valve released the update that blocked access to the replays and data from the Immortal Draft matches above 8.5k MMR. Presumably, this was done to make professional Dota 2 more diverse. Not everyone in the scene liked that solution, but many players praised the idea.
