Team Secret's leader Clement "Puppey" Ivanov commented on their situation in DPC WEU 2023 league after the team's first victory in the tournament. He joked about the upcoming relegation match against KuroKy's Nigma, and shared his thoughts on meta and drafting in the post-match interview with the panel.
We started to realize that we were going to get relegated. I started to understand that I'm about to play against Kuro. And it needs to be a hype match. So this relegation match, I've not been part of it before. It's interesting. Now we are going to sell tickets to the arena somewhere. <...>
I watched a lot of Nigma's games. Their lineups have been funny. Cause Ammar is just playing offlane from the safelane 90% of the time. The game I felt was best for them was when they drafted meta heroes plus Ammar as Sven. That was a lineup that basically could beat any team. I think I should also be very careful of giving away a lineup where all three of their cores feel happy. Specifically, though, they're in a mess just like we are. There are much more things that are going wrong for them than right.
I think it'll take time to transition BOOM perfectly. You know, losing TI is different from winning TI. A 3rd place is a little bit better than the 2nd, I would say. You have a little bit of hope, like, "Oh, maybe we can make it next year." But when you get 2nd place, it feels different. The point is, we had a good run but couldn't keep the momentum going. It kinda struck us down.
Obviously, we love our drafts because they got us so many wins. To be honest, no problem is there [laughs]. Seriously, the meta changes pretty fast. One day Lina is good, and the other, she's not good anymore. These nuances need to be figured out very carefully. I think we lacked that material very hard this season, and now we're maybe getting out of the group, which is practically our fault. But that's just life.
I don't really have that many things to say because Dota is all about doing the right moves. And if you don't really know what heroes and concepts are good, and what's working against... whatever. Because stats don't really help you. You check up stats to see what's good against Lina, and it's Meepo. Well, that's not good stats: some guy cheesing the games winning 70% of the time and selling accounts. Maybe it's Nikobaby doing that again, who knows?
Yeah, it's pretty bad, but I wouldn't say it's crazy bad. You don't know what's going on behind closed doors. There were many times when we lost like 20 scrims in a row. This stuff happens constantly. That's equal to losing 10 DPC matches, in a way. Morale-wise, at least. And you have to come out and think of what's really going on. You have to have a team talk and get yourself out of this situation. We're obviously not in good morale right now, losing five matches in a row. In some of them, we really got stomped.
It happens. We have to talk to each other. We have to talk about all the inconvenient things that are probably ruining our game. Even if it's very hard for people to swallow. Everybody needs to pitch in, and if it doesn't work out, then it doesn't work out. That's just something you need to do as a team.
Team Secret defeated Into The Breach with a 2:0 score, achieving the first victory in the current season. With a match record of 1-5, they share 6-7th place with ITB, while Nigma is in the last place with 0-4 but with three matches ahead of them. Kuroky and Puppey's clash will happen on January 28.
