Team Secret's captain Clement "Puppey" Ivanov explained the importance of Last Chance qualifier for him, and said that he'd like to convince Valve to continue with this addition on the next tournaments. He talked about it on The International 2022 press conference, held online on October 25.
It is very important. Apparently, they are not going to do it again, but I would want to convince them otherwise. Because the issue with really stacked regions means you won’t get some of those teams to TI. And I think it’s really valuable for any of these teams. Let’s say, we would win the regional qualifiers. And Entity does deserve to be at TI. And Liquid obviously too, as you can see. They actually need a fair fighting chance to qualify. Obviously, life is not fair, but we can kinda make something fair, like that. LC qualifier is an opportunity for a lot of teams to show what they got.
Roman "Resolut1on" Fomynok added that this qualifier shows which region is the strongest, because you pool an equal amount of runner-up teams from each regional qualifier. And Baqyt "Zayac" Emiljanov agreed with him. In his opinion, there are still too many DPC points in the regional leagues even after all the reductions of this season. "You get a lot of teams from weak regions, and not a lot of teams from strong regions, it’s bad, that’s why LCQ helps", said support.
It’s a good way to thin down who is bad and who is good and to get some correct teams into TI without having any crazy system.
Puppey's opinion is understandable, since both winners of Last Chance qualifier are still in contention for Aegis of Champions, and his team is one of them. When Finals Weekend will start on October 29, he will fight Tundra Esports in the Upper Bracket final. Team Liquid, who will play against Aster, is another team from LC still in the tournament.
Last Chance qualifier is a new addition to The International, similar to Wildcard stage, which existed in the past. When announcing the change, Valve explained that LCQ will be needed at TI11 to avoid the issues of each region earning the same number of DPC points. So it was known from the beginning that they weren't planning to run it next time. But with a very positive fan reaction and huge success of LCQ teams, we all can join Puppey in hoping they will reconsider that decision.
